History of Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Downey
Greek Orthodox Church Downey: A Lasting Presence in Los Angeles
The history of Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Downey, California, reflects decades of faith, perseverance, and community growth within the Greek Orthodox tradition in Southern California.
Greek Orthodox Christians have lived in the Downey area since the 1950s. During those early years, families attended nearby parishes throughout Los Angeles County. However, as the community grew, so did the desire to establish a permanent Greek Orthodox presence in Downey.
The Founding of the Greek Orthodox Church in Downey
In 1982, local families came together with a shared vision: to build a Greek Orthodox church in Downey that would serve future generations. As a result, the parish of Saint George was officially formed.
At first, the community worshiped in rented spaces at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Although temporary, these early gatherings laid the spiritual foundation for what would become a thriving parish.

Establishing a Permanent Greek Orthodox Church in Downey
A major milestone came in 1995, when the parish purchased its current property on Downey Avenue. Soon after, several vacant storefronts were transformed into a chapel and fellowship hall.
This step marked a turning point. Not only did the church now have a permanent location, but it also created a central gathering place for worship, education, and community life.
Building the Sanctuary of Saint George Greek Orthodox Church
In September 2000, the parish celebrated the groundbreaking for its new sanctuary. Construction began in March 2001 and was completed in September 2002.
On October 6, 2002, the doors of Saint George Greek Orthodox Church officially opened. The historic event was led by the late Metropolitan Anthony of San Francisco, alongside His Grace Bishop Anthimos of Olympos.
For parishioners, this moment represented the fulfillment of a long-held dream: a permanent house of worship built through faith, dedication, and unity.
A Living Tradition of Faith and Culture in Downey
Today, Saint George Greek Orthodox Church continues to serve as both a spiritual home and a cultural center in Downey.
Each year, the parish celebrates its heritage through the annual Greek Festival. This event welcomes the wider Los Angeles community to experience Greek food, music, dance, and Orthodox traditions.
