Yianni’s Life
A Life That Continues to Inspire
Ioannis “Yianni” Konstandinou Koumoudouros lived a life defined by warmth, faith, and connection. Though his time was tragically short, the impact he had on those around him continues to be deeply felt.
Early Life and Family
Yianni was born on June 8, 1989, to Kostoula and Kostas Koumoudouros. From an early age, he was known for his bright, contagious smile and his ability to lift the spirits of everyone around him.
His family quickly recognized something special in him — a rare combination of intelligence, charisma, and kindness that would shape the way he moved through the world.
Education and Achievement
Yianni grew up in Downey, California, attending Unsworth Elementary, Doty Middle School (formerly East Middle School), and Downey High School.
He excelled academically and was often recognized as one of the top students in his class.
He continued his education at the University of California, Irvine, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics — a reflection of both his discipline and intellectual curiosity.
Faith and Community
Faith played a central role in Yianni’s life.
He was deeply connected to Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Downey, where he served as an altar boy, participated in Sunday School, and took part in the Greek Folk Dance Festival (FDF).
He also played in the Greek Orthodox Basketball League, combining his love of sports with his strong sense of community.
Yianni’s involvement in the church was not just participation — it was part of who he was.
Personality and Passions
More than anything, Yianni loved being with his friends.
Whether dancing at FDF, spending time at church, or playing basketball, he brought energy, humor, and joy to every moment.
Basketball, in particular, was one of his greatest passions. He played often, not just to compete, but to connect — always making sure that everyone around him was having a good time.
He had a natural ability to bring people together, creating moments that those close to him still cherish.
A Life Remembered
On November 14, 2016, Yianni tragically passed away in a car accident at the age of 27.
While his life was far too short, it was filled with meaning, connection, and love.
Today, his memory lives on through the people he touched, the community he helped shape, and the legacy that continues through the Yianni Project.
Yianni’s life continues through the community he loved and the lives he changed.
